My name is Janice and I was a computer science teacher for almost 30 years. Although I’m retired I can’t help sharing my knowledge and skills with others. I know it sounds corny but helping others – helping them learn – is who I am.
So… here’s a little bit about myself: I live in Ontario, Canada. with my partner, 1 cuddly cat and a protective dog.
Over the years I taught computer science in BASIC, Pascal, C/C++, Turing and Java. I’ve recently picked up Python and Turtle just cause I’m a little bit crazy.
I designed courses and resources for intro computer science, computer engineering, as well as Pre-AP and AP A/AB in two different computer languages.
My grads now have very successful careers. Yes, there are software and computer engineers, but there are also doctors, dentists, lawyers as well as others. Some have won awards and/or created started their own successful companies.
I am SO PROUD of them all!
Since I retired in 2016 I’ve been learning. I love learning! And boy, have I been learning!
I spent the better part of 30 years concentrating on understanding new programming languages and designing curriculum for high school students.
The surprising thing is – I’m not a programmer! My degree is in music performance. We didn’t have computers when I grew up – ok, so I’m old. But not that old!
Now that I have time on my hands I want to catch up. I’ve tackled web design: WordPress, and Elementor Pro, along with many of the Adobe Creative Cloud programs: Premiere, Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.
While I was a teacher I never felt comfortable having any social media accounts. Now I have Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter accounts. Mastering social media and marketing is a whole other ball of wax, or “code” if you prefer!
If you’re a newbie on these platforms there is a VERY steep learning curve and I’m not ashamed to admit I’m still learning.
The same goes for all that software I listed above. I’m learning new tricks every day.
So, if you’re interested in programming as a coder, or teaching it in school, take a look at my blog posts or my resources.
